WITH ONE STREAK IN POCKET, PATS SEEK TO TIE
SEASON WIN MARK; 4-0 EAGLES IN REMATCH
OF NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH PANTHERS

Now on to the regular season!

The New England Patriots have taken their "one-game-at-a-time" mantra and molded it into a 19-victory-in-a-row streak which last Sunday established the NFL record for most consecutive wins over the regular season and playoffs.

This Sunday they can tie the 1933-34 Chicago Bears for the regular season record for consecutive victories at 17:

One game at a time? Leave it to an offensive lineman to put that philosophy in its simplest terms. "It’s hard to play them two games at a time," says Patriots tackle MATT LIGHT.

Of course, Matt’s right. The Pats have used that single-game mind-set to build their unprecedented string. The way they look at, they have won only four in a row – all this year – and go for their fifth this week, period!

Two other clubs espouse the same belief – the 4-0 New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, who with the Patriots give 2004 a tie for the second-most undefeated teams since 1990 through five weeks behind the four such clubs of 2003.

So, coming off a wild week in which four teams – Baltimore, Minnesota, St. Louis and San Francisco – won after coming back from double-digit deficits, here are some "one-game-at-a-time" highlight matchups for Week 6:

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (3-1) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (4-0): This one came this close to being a battle of unbeatens.

But then the St. Louis Rams came back from a 17-point deficit last Sunday to top the Seahawks in overtime 33-27, thereby almost quadrupling the total points surrendered by the ’Hawks in ’04 (13 to 46).

"We’re quite young," says Seattle head coach MIKE HOLMGREN. "We have to learn to handle being ahead in a game as well as being behind in close situations."

"Close situations," Mike? Welcome to New England, where the Patriots have minted that kind of existence. New England has built its 19-game win streak on a sparse 9.2-point margin of victory.

The Patriots’ TOM BRADY, who has thrown only two interceptions in his past 10 home regular season games, confronts a Seahawks defense that ties the New York Giants for most interceptions (8) in the league.

And the turning New England leaves will be familiar to one key Seahawk -- quarterback MATT HASSELBECK. His father DON was a tight end for the Patriots from 1977-83, and Matt graduated from Boston College.

NFL FACTOID

.750 TEAMS: Through five weeks of the season, there are 11 teams with .750 or better winning percentages. That ties 1998 and 1999 for the second-most such teams at this point since 1970. There were 12 .750 teams in 1996.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS (4-1) at DALLAS COWBOYS (2-2): The NFL’s only rookie starting quarterback against its oldest – the Steelers’ BEN ROETHLISBERGER (23) vs. VINNY TESTAVERDE (40).

"Big Ben (6-5, 242)," as they call him in Pittsburgh, joins only five other rookie quarterbacks since 1970 to win their first three starts. Those three wins give him a better debut than Steel Town icon TERRY BRADSHAW – who, of course, went on to win four Super Bowls. Bradshaw lost his first three starts, compiling a 36.6 passer rating in that time compared to Roethlisberger’s 94.5. "He has a big-time arm," says Bradshaw.

Of course, arms don’t come much more healthy than Testaverde’s. His right one has thrown for the seventh-most yardage in history – 41,960. "Vinny is one of the best physical specimens to play quarterback in the history of the NFL," says former QB and CBS analyst PHIL SIMMS.

With all that anticipated throwing, the teams’ running games can’t be forgotten. The Steelers’ DUCE STALEY has three 100-yard games in a row. Dallas’ EDDIE GEORGE, RE SHARD LEE and RICHIE ANDERSON combined for 166 yards last week.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (3-2) at ATLANTA FALCONS (4-1): Marty Ball vs. Mora Ball.

Only this type of "Marty Ball" comes through quick air strikes rather than the old time grind-it-out style that Chargers head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER became known for in his previous coaching spots.

The Chargers work on quick starts in practice. Last week, they got off to a 21-0 lead against Jacksonville in an eventual 34-21 victory. Quarterback DREW BREES threw six consecutive passes to open the game, and even premier running back LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON caught two passes before his first rush.

"Mora Ball"? That’s the tough defensive attitude that new Falcons head coach JIM MORA has brought to the team. "I’ll take good defense over good offense any day," says Mora. Atlanta’s defense is ranked eighth overall in the league – after finishing last in 2003 – with its rush defense tops in the NFL.

Key matchup: Although they don’t go against each other, this is the first time Falcons quarterback MICHAEL VICK, who Atlanta selected No. 1 overall in the 2001 NFL Draft with the choice they obtained from San Diego, faces Tomlinson, who the Chargers selected fifth overall with the Falcons’ pick.

CAROLINA PANTHERS (1-3) at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (4-0): Different year. Different teams?

It might seem so. This time last year, the Panthers were 3-1, the Eagles 2-2. They faced each other at the same site in the NFC Championship Game, with Carolina winning 14-3 to advance to Super Bowl XXXVIII.

What did the Eagles do after their third consecutive Championship Game loss? Went out and got wide receiver TERRELL OWENS and defensive end JEVON KEARSE among others. Both have played a big role in the team’s perfect record in which Philly has triumphed over every opponent by double digits.

Owens, linking up with quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB, has a TD catch in every game, and his six total rank second only to RANDY MOSS (7) in the league. Kearse has 3.0 sacks, and has been lining up at linebacker in certain situations, causing blocking problems.

Carolina is hurting at running back, and not sure their regular starter STEPHEN DAVIS can return from a knee injury. But the Panthers’ defense is solid as usual, with their pass "D" ranked No. 4 in the league. Corners RICKY MANNING, JR. and rookie CHRIS GAMBLE will race with the speedy Owens.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (1-4) at ST. LOUIS RAMS (3-2) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): Both come off exhilarating victories, and want to exhilarate even more on Monday night.

The Buccaneers won their first of the year on Sunday behind BRIAN GRIESE, at one time their third quarterback, who will start Monday night. Replacing an injured CHRIS SIMMS against New Orleans in the first quarter, Griese completed 16 of 19 passes for 194 yards and the winning TD pass.

He goes against a peer who had a sizzling game in Week 5 – MARC BULGER. In his second full year as a starter, Bulger rallied his team to their 17-point comeback win over Seattle by throwing two TD passes in the final 5:34 of regulation, and then connecting for a 52-yard TD strike to SHAUN MC DONALD three minutes into OT.

Key matchup: Rams WR TORRY HOLT, who has averaged 147.7 yards in three games against Tampa Bay, against the Bucs’ No. 3 NFL pass defense.
