BATTLE OF UNBEATENS AS PATS GO FOR WIN RECORD VS. JETS; EAGLES SEEK SIXTH IN ROW BY 10 POINTS

6-0 and 18-0h!

Somebody in Foxborough, Massachusetts could reach one or both of those totals this Sunday in the first NFL game in 31 years between undefeated teams at this point in a season.

It’s Week 7 in the NFL, and the 5-0 New England Patriots, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles have yet to lose. Baring a tie, one of those first two will fall this Sunday as the AFC East rivals collide in one of the week’s highlight games.

The Patriots – who have not lost since September 28 of last year – can set the NFL regular season record for most consecutive victories with 18. Last week they tied GEORGE HALAS’ 1933-34 Chicago Bears for the longest such streak at 17. New England has won an unprecedented 20 in a row, including playoff games. Halas would have loved these guys. Talk about "blue collar"! The Patriots have an even tighter margin-of-victory than the Bears of 70 years ago:

Yes, Halas would have loved these guys. "It’s a tough locker room if you’re a prima donna," says Patriots safety RODNEY HARRISON. "There’s not one guy who singles himself out as being better or different than anyone else."

So, it’s on to Week 7, and some great storylines:

NEW YORK JETS (5-0) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (5-0): A rare one indeed. The matchup will be only the fourth time in NFL history that teams with at least a 5-0 record meet. And it is only the third time ever that two teams in the same division started 5-0 (see other teams below).

With these teams, you never know who might be the hero. Could it be Corey or Curtis? Tom or Chad? Or the 53rd players on the rosters?

A good place to start are with the running backs. In his three years with the Patriots (1995-97), the Jets’ CURTIS MARTIN became the first Patriot to run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. In the six years since, the club has had two such seasons. The Pats might have found their new Martin in COREY DILLON, obtained in a trade this year from Cincinnati. Both rank in the top 10 in NFL rushing (Martin, No. 1, 613 yards; Dillon, No. 9, 522).

The QBs? As steady as they come. The Jets’ CHAD PENNINGTON leads the conference in completion percentage (70.4). The Pats’ TOM BRADY ranks second in the AFC with a 7.0 TD percentage.

New York is 5-1 in New England since 1998. The Pats have won their last 12 at home. Last team to beat them there? The Jets on December 22, 2002 (30-17).

5-0 or better games: 11/13/21 – Buffalo All-Americans (6-0) vs. Akron Pros (7-0); 11/4/23 – Canton Bulldogs (5-0) vs. Chicago Cardinals (5-0); 10/28/73 – Minnesota Vikings (6-0) vs. Los Angeles Rams (6-0)……5-0 division teams: 1934 – Chicago Bears & Detroit Lions (Western); 1968 – Baltimore Colts & Los Angeles Rams (Coastal).

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (5-0) at CLEVELAND BROWNS (3-3): Ten points or bust!

NFL FACTOID

FIRST NFL TV GAME 65 YEARS AGO: Now more than 100 million TV viewers watch the NFL each week (an average of 14.3 million per game). But 65 years ago this Friday (October 22, 1939), only 1,000 New York City homes watched the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first NFL game ever televised. RCA’s experimental station W2XBS carried the contest, won by Brooklyn 23-14 before 13,057 fans.

Of course, the Eagles will settle for a one-point victory, but they seek to become only the seventh team in history to win each of a season’s first six games by at least 10 points (1920 Buffalo All-Americans, 1934 and ’42 Chicago Bears, 1963 Cleveland Browns, 1968 Dallas Cowboys and 1999 St. Louis Rams).

The quarterbacks are two of the most efficient in NFL history. Philadelphia’s DONOVAN MC NABB (No. 2; 2.23) and Cleveland’s JEFF GARCIA (No. 4; 2.46) rank among the top five QBs all-time in lowest career interception percentage. Both come off impressive games.

McNabb had his first TD-less game of the year, but still hooked up with new favorite target TERRELL OWENS for two 50-yard connections that led to scores. Garcia – talk about connections – teamed with ANDRE DAVIS for only the 10th 99-yard completion in NFL history. "It was off to the races," said Garcia.

The Browns are 3-0 at home this year (and could go 4-0 for the first time since 1963), where they have surrendered an average of 11.0 points. That clashes with the Eagles’ 27.4 points per game this season. "We need to take care of things at home," says Cleveland defensive end KENARD LANG.

Matchup to watch: Garcia vs. Eagles left corner LITO SHEPPARD, who had two interceptions last week, returning one for a touchdown.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (4-2) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (4-1): Didn’t these two just meet?

Just three weeks ago, the Colts gave the division-rival "Cardiac Cats" their first defeat of the year, 24-17. "It was a patience-tester," says Indy quarterback PEYTON MANNING. The Jaguars, needing a late touchdown, fell short on a fourth-and-one attempt.

That was unusual for Jacksonville. Three of their victories have come in the last 45 seconds of play. "We believe we can win any ballgame against any opponent," says Jaguars wide receiver JIMMY SMITH.

That belief will be tested Sunday. The Colts have scored twice as many points as their opponents in the fourth quarter (59 to 25). Manning, the NFL’s second-ranked passer (114.1), has thrown for more touchdowns (14) than 22 teams have total TDs. Eight of his TDs have come in the first half of the Colts’ two home games.

But the Jags swear by their man, second-year starter BYRON LEFTWICH, the engineer of those late-game comebacks who has a better fourth-quarter rating than Manning (95.3 to 84.0). "When the game is on the line, I believe in my quarterback," says Smith.

With all the air histrionics, it could still come down to those two Florida high school buddies -- RBs EDGERRIN JAMES of Indy and FRED TAYLOR of Jacksonville, the fifth- and 11th-ranked rushers in the AFC.

DETROIT LIONS (3-2) at NEW YORK GIANTS (4-1): Power vs. power, on the ground.

The Giants have equaled their 2003 win total due in big part to their running game. It is led by TIKI BARBER and an off-tackle play called, simply, "power." The eight-year RB is averaging a career-best yards-per-carry average of 6.0, the best such mark in the league among the top-20 rushers. He has four 100-yard games. Problem is he goes up against a Lions front four that has not allowed a 100-yarder all year.

The Giants’ defense? They will try to confuse third-year quarterback JOEY HARRINGTON with their 4-3 alignment that can quickly become a 3-4 with blitzes from anywhere.

The teams match up well in another category – takeaways/giveaways, "probably the most critical statistic in winning and losing," says Giants head coach TOM COUGHLIN. New York leads the NFL with a plus-11 mark, the Lions rank fifth with plus-8.

DENVER BRONCOS (5-1) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (1-4) (Monday night, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): Some things, like the Denver Broncos’ running game, never seem to change. Only the parts do. This week, it’s up to the Cincinnati Bengals to dismantle those parts. It won’t be easy.

Since head coach MIKE SHANAHAN arrived in Denver, the Broncos have rushed for more yards (21,060) and had more 100-yard rush games (70) than any other NFL team. And it doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s TERRELL DAVIS, OLANDIS GARY, CLINTON PORTIS, MIKE ANDERSON, QUENTIN GRIFFIN or, like last week, REUBEN DROUGHNS (176 yards following a 193-yarder the week before).

The Bengals are ready for their first Monday night game since 1992 and first at home since 1989. "Coach (MARVIN LEWIS) said there would be no better way to snap out of this (1-4) funk than to beat Denver on Monday Night Football," says Bengals guard ERIC STEINBACH.
