LOTS OF TRICKS & TREATS AS NFL HITS HALLOWEEN;
PERFECT PATS & EAGLES SEEK TO STAY SPOTLESS

It’s Halloween! Time for the NFL to put on America’s favorite costumes for a little football trick-and-treating.

Chief among the Halloween revelers will be two teams seeking to keep their appearance spotless – the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. The Eagles (6-0) have not lost this year. The Patriots haven’t lost in more than a year.

This year, the Pats are 6-0. They set the NFL’s consecutive regular season victory mark last week when they won their 18th in a row. Add that to the consecutive regular season and playoff record streak they established three weeks ago, and New England’s victory number can be upped to 21.

Everyone is impressed with those numbers but the team itself. "It is what it is," says New England wide receiver DAVID PATTEN. "It’s a sign we’ve done a great job to this point, but we have two-thirds of the season to play."

Which also means, David, there are still plenty of other records for the Patriots to set. In fact, there are eight more official NFL "Games Won" records that the team can reach this year -- ranging from "Most Consecutive Games Without Defeat" (includes ties) to "Most Consecutive Games Won, End of Season." The marks are on pages 636-637 of the 2004 NFL Record & Fact Book.

Key games this weekend include:

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (6-0) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (5-1): Only one loss between ’em!

And what October record will tell? The 35-13 lifetime mark for the month of Steelers head coach BILL COWHER, or the 8-0 record of the Patriots the past two years?

It will be a matchup of quarterbacks who have surprised many. The Patriots’ TOM BRADY was a sixth-round draft choice five years ago who has won two Super Bowls, becoming what New England offensive coordinator CHARLIE WEIS calls "the next closest thing to a coach" for his game-plan understanding.

Pittsburgh rookie BEN ROETHLISBERGER arrived with high expectations – he’s a first-round draft choice, after all – but not the expectation to be so productive this soon. The first Steelers rookie to start at quarterback since BUBBY BRISTER in 1986, Roethlisberger became the first QB to win his first four starts at the beginning of his rookie season since PHIL SIMMS in 1979. Simms will cover the game as an analyst for CBS-TV.

What Pittsburgh will try to do Sunday is bottle up the Pats right from the start. New England has scored first in its past 11 regular season victories. The Steelers have shown a pressing, blitzing defense this year – a throwback to their ’90s teams. They have forced 15 turnovers, only 10 fewer than for all of last year.

Matchup to watch: Duce vs. Dillon. It’s getting colder, so the new rushing aces of each team could spell the difference. Ex-Eagle DUCE STALEY of the Steelers already has three 100-yard games. New Patriot, former Bengal COREY DILLON (637) is five yards short of New England’s top individual rush effort of last year (642).

BALTIMORE RAVENS (4-2) at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (6-0): The "T.O. Bowl," or "T.O. vs. P.T."

Eagles wide receiver TERRELL OWENS was a member of the Ravens for two weeks last spring, but then

NFL FACTOID

THE "NO. 1" DIVISION: This week, the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars (5-2), with quarterback BYRON LEFTWICH, meet the division-rival Houston Texans (3-3), led by quarterback DAVID CARR. Those QBs make up half of the only NFL division with all first-round quarterbacks as starters, joining Indianapolis’ PEYTON MANNING and Tennessee’s STEVE MC NAIR.

prompted a trade to Philly and has joined quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB to form one of the NFL’s

most lethal air tandems.

Owens (8) already has nearly half the team’s total TD catches (17) of last year, and four consecutive 100-yard games. He has helped McNabb raise his passer rating from 51.1 through Week 7 last season to 105.6, third in the league. And be ready, Ravens! In a preseason meeting between the teams this summer (won by Philadelphia 27-16), the Eagles’ first play of the game was an 81-yard McNabb TD pass to Owens.

McNabb-Owens, though, come up against a Baltimore defense ranked seventh in the NFL, spurred on not only by inspirational leader RAY LEWIS but a superb backfield, including DEION "PRIME TIME" SANDERS, who had two interceptions last week with one returned for a TD. The Eagles – wearing their black jerseys on Halloween Sunday – face a Baltimore "D" that ties Seattle for the NFL’s most interceptions (10). Safeties ED REED (3, with 104 return yards) and CHAD WILLIAMS (2, 112) are two of the three DBs in the league with 100 return yards (Houston’s MARCUS COLEMAN, 2 for 116) this year.

Matchup to watch: T.O. vs. Prime Time. There should be some classic lines flying between Owens and Ravens nickel back DEION SANDERS.

NEW YORK GIANTS (4-2) at MINNESOTA VIKINGS (5-1): Teams have been trying to stop DAUNTE CULPEPPER all season, but the Vikings’ quarterback is on fire! He leads the league in completion percentage (73.3), touchdown passes (19), passer rating (124.0), and arm-rolls – that revolving-forearm motion (after the song, "Get Your Roll On") he performs that signals yet another Vikings TD.

Culpepper will have a limited RANDY MOSS to throw to this week. Due to a right hamstring pull last Sunday, the wide receiver went without a catch for the first time in his seven-year career, participating in only two plays. Head coach MIKE TICE says Moss may be used this week inside the 20 and on third-down plays.

The Giants know their enemy and its lair. New York has defeated the Vikes the past two years on the road, knocking them from the unbeaten ranks (6-1) last season with a 29-17 decision, also in Week 8.

New York ties for the NFL’s third-most interceptions (8; Culpepper has only three). Ten different Giants have at least one sack, thanks to the team’s constant defensive line rotation.

Matchup to watch: The RBs. The Giants’ TIKI BARBER is second in the NFC with 647 yards, and Vikings rookie MEWELDE MOORE set a three-game team record last week with 610 total yards, besting CHUCK FOREMAN’s 573 in 1976.

ATLANTA FALCONS (5-2) at DENVER BRONCOS (5-2): "We’ll recover." Falcons head coach JIM MORA says it and believes it. So do the Broncos.

Atlanta’s rush defense – rated No. 1 in the NFL entering the game – surrendered an NFL-record eight rushing touchdowns last Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs in a 56-10 defeat. "Sometimes the one-pointers you lose can be so heartbreaking," says Mora. "With this, you can say it’s an aberration."

The Broncos certainly think their game this past Monday night – a 23-10 loss to Cincinnati – was just that. It was only the second time this season their second-ranked NFL defense surrendered that many points (24). Quarterback JAKE PLUMMER was sacked three times, equaling the Broncs’ total for their first six games.

"Somebody will have problems next week," says Denver cornerback CHAMP BAILEY, meaning the Falcons.

Matchup to watch: Four-time NFL All-Star Bailey – out to prove the two 50-yard passes he surrendered to Cincy on Monday were an aberration -- keying on the unpredictable moves of Falcons quarterback MICHAEL VICK.

MIAMI DOLPHINS (1-6) at NEW YORK JETS (5-1) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): Throw out the records -- it’s Jets-Fish!

"It’s always fun, always intense, always going to be a fight regardless of what the records are," says Jets running back CURTIS MARTIN, who has rushed for more TDs (12) against Miami than any other team.

The Jets come off a tight loss to New England (13-7). The Dolphins, executing big and trick plays, handled St. Louis last week for their first win, 31-14. They committed no turnovers and allowed the Rams to convert only two of 13 third-down situations.

Last year, the Dolphins broke their five-game road losing streak to the Jets. One of those defeats was that 23-point Jets comeback the last time these two met on MNF -- October 23, 2000, an epic 40-37 NY overtime win.

Matchup to watch: Dolphins pass defense, which holds the NFL’s active streak of not allowing a 300-yard passer (20 games), against QB CHAD PENNINGTON, who has one such game (304 yards) this year.
