SEASON HITS MID-POINT; STREAK-BREAKER STEELERS
NOW SEEK TO STOP PHILLY;
COLTS-VIKINGS OFFENSES CLASH ON MONDAY NIGHT

Oh, those streak-breaking Steelers!

Last week, it was "21 & Done," as a sign at Heinz Field read when the Steelers broke the unprecedented 21-game regular season and playoff consecutive victory streak of the New England Patriots. Next Pittsburgh visitor? The NFL’s lone undefeated team, the 7-0 Philadelphia Eagles.

The Steelers can become the first club in NFL history to defeat teams with at least 6-0 records in consecutive weeks. They’ll attempt to do it against their state brethren. "Make no mistake," says Pittsburgh running back JEROME BETTIS. "It’s going to be tough to do the same thing two weeks in a row." Consecutive weeks against 6-0/+ teams:

November is here, and so is the NFL’s season mid-point. From here on, the race only tightens, with everybody pointed toward the….playoffs! Some highlight mid-season games in Week 9:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (7-0) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (6-1): The "Flock" touches down in "Roethlis-burgh," as they’re calling it after stellar Steelers rookie quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER.

Big Ben has captured Steel City hearts by not exactly coming from nowhere – he was the team’s first-round draft choice this year – but by not only starting the team’s past five games, but winning them. With a victory Sunday, he will tie former Steeler MIKE KRUCZEK (1976) for the most consecutive wins by an NFL rookie QB since 1970.

With nine TD passes, Roethlisberger has already broken the team’s rookie mark in the category of TERRY HANRATTY (8) in 1969. "He doesn’t look like a rookie to me," says Patriots safety RODNEY HARRISON.

There will be some great sub-plots in the game.

Pittsburgh running back DUCE STALEY, who had three 1,000-yard seasons in his seven years in Philadelphia, will face his old mates for the first time. "I spent a lot of good years in Philly," says Staley. "All good years."

There also will be the NFL’s fifth-ranked passer, the Eagles’ DONOVAN MC NABB (102.9), going against the league’s fifth-ranked defense which has 17 takeaways, tied for second-most in the league…speedy Eagles left defensive end JEVON KEARSE – coming off a two-sack game – against Steelers 317-pound right tackle OLIVER ROSS…and "T.O." – Eagles wideout TERRELL OWENS, already (9) with more than half the team’s total TD catches of last year (17), against cornerback DESHEA TOWNSEND, with three interceptions on the season, including a 39-yard TD return against New England on Sunday.

On top of all that excitement, the Steelers will salute the 25th anniversary of their Super Bowl XIV title team.

HOUSTON TEXANS (4-3) at DENVER BRONCOS (5-3): How ’bout them Texans?!

******************************************************************************************************************************************

NFL FACTOID

SCORING UP: NFL scoring has increased by almost a touchdown per game over the past four weeks. Games have averaged 44.4 points in Weeks 5-8. That compares to 38.5 for Weeks 1-4.

******************************************************************************************************************************************

They are tied for second in the AFC South…winners of four of their past five games (with the fifth going to OT)… above .500 for the first time in team history this late in the season…and going for their third road victory in a row.

"I think people are going to have to start taking notice," says Texans defensive end ROBAIRE SMITH.

Of course, the Texans should well take notice of the evenly balanced Broncos. Denver is the only club in the league to rank no lower than 10th in the six main yardage categories – total/rush/pass offense, and total/rush/ pass defense. Broncos quarterback JAKE PLUMMER, with the third-most TD passes in the league, threw for a team-record 499 yards last week. Yet with all that heaving, the Broncos’ solid offensive line did not allow a sack.

Matchups to watch: Two of the top three AFC receiving yards leaders will go at it. Houston’s ANDRE JOHNSON, the club’s 2003 first-round choice, has 665 yards and four TDs ("I’d like to have him in my arsenal," says Minnesota head coach MIKE TICE. "I’d never run the ball"). Denver’s 10-year veteran ROD SMITH has 608 yards (three TDs), including the league’s most-productive game this year – 208 yards last Sunday.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (3-4) at SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (5-3): How ’bout them Chargers?!

They are tied for first in the AFC West with Denver…winners of four of their past five…boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league (219 points)…and led by a quarterback on fire.

San Diego’s DREW BREES is the third-ranked passer in the NFL (106.8) and comes off a team record-setting game against Oakland. His passer rating (153.1; perfect is 158.3) and completion percentage (88.0) set Chargers records. His five TD passes were one behind the club record of Hall of Famer DAN FOUTS. "I feel we have something special here," says Brees. "I want more than anything for it to keep up."

The Saints – coming off a bye -- will not make it easy. After scoring only seven points in their opener, they have averaged 24.5 points a game since. Wide receiver JOE HORN -- who has at least one catch in 84 consecutive games – leads the NFC in receptions (47) and ties for the third-most third-down catches (12) in the conference. And the Saints have scored 13 touchdowns in the red-zone, third-most in the NFC.

Matchup to watch: First NFL meeting of the top two 2001 running back first-round draft choices – San Diego’s LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON (No. 5) vs. New Orleans’ DEUCE MC ALLISTER (No. 23).

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (6-1) at ST. LOUIS RAMS (4-3): Wasn’t it just Super Bowl XXXVI?

That was the last time these teams met, and the Patriots’ 20-17 victory was the first of their two Super Bowl titles in the past three years. Of course, to follow was New England’s amazing 21-game winning streak that was finally snapped last week by Pittsburgh.

It will be a battle of 2000 low-round (TOM BRADY, sixth round)/no-round (MARC BULGER, free agent) quarterbacks. Brady has won two Super Bowls and title game MVP trophies. Bulger has not as yet captured any championships, but has built a 22-7 record as a starter, and has as his head coach MIKE MARTZ says, "ice water in his veins."

He will need it with the opportunistic Patriots. And New England will have to handle the still-explosive Rams, who join Green Bay as the only offense in both conferences with three players in the top 10 on the rushing and receptions charts – running back MARSHALL FAULK and receivers ISAAC BRUCE and TORRY HOLT.

Interesting stat: Martz is 4-0 after bye weeks, second-most wins to ANDY REID’s 5-0 among active coaches.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS (5-2) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (4-3) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): The roof may

pop off the RCA Dome in this one!

Two of the NFL’s most explosive teams – coming off galling losses – with two of the most prolific QBs in the league square off. The Vikings’ DAUNTE CULPEPPER (20; 2,180; 114.2) and the Colts’ PEYTON MANNING (22; 2,161; 117.4) rank either first or second in the league in touchdown passes, yardage and passer rating.

Culpepper may not have his receiving buddy available, RANDY MOSS (hamstring), who loves performing on the Monday night stage (11 TDs in nine MNF games). If not, he will go to MARCUS ROBINSON (second on the team with six TDs) or NATE BURLESON (2).

Indy comes off its second loss in a row (45-35) after linking up with Kansas City in a 1,095-yard game, the third-highest total in NFL annals. Wideout MARVIN HARRISON leads the AFC in TD receptions (7).
