SURGING PANTHERS FACE FALCONS IN SATURDAY SHOWDOWN
AS NFC CLUBS VIE FOR PLAYOFF POSITION

It’s a great time of the year in the NFL!

The Atlanta Falcons are division champions. So are the Philadelphia Eagles. Now 13 other NFC teams are vying for the remaining four spots, with 15 of 16 NFC teams alive in the race to Super Bowl XXXIX.

That group includes the surging Carolina Panthers, who will aim for their sixth consecutive victory in a prime-time showdown against the Falcons on Saturday night (ESPN, 8:30 P.M.) at the Georgia Dome. After a 1-7 start, the Panthers have regained their winning form from a year ago, averaging 29.0 points per game in their five-game winning streak.

"Now is the exciting part of things," says Carolina head coach JOHN FOX. "We dug ourselves a big hole and we don’t have much room for error. We’ve been in this situation for five or six weeks. There is that excitement in the air. I’m excited for our city, our organization and for our players, because they have fought hard to get to where we are right now. Atlanta is playing very, very well right now and we have a big challenge ahead of us."

Following are the records of NFC playoff contenders, their remaining games and their wins and losses against other NFC playoff hopefuls:
