FOR USE AS DESIRED 49ERS QB TIM RATTAY, LIONS DE JAMES
HALL & Quarterback TIM RATTAY of the San Francisco 49ers, defensive end JAMES HALL of the Detroit Lions and kicker STEVE CHRISTIE of the New York Giants are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2004 season (October 10-11), the NFL announced today. OFFENSE: QB TIM RATTAY, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Rattay led the 49ers to a come-from-behind 31-28 overtime win against the Arizona Cardinals, helping San Francisco overcome a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit en route to its first win of the season. Rattay posted a franchise-record 38 completions – besting JOE MONTANA’s 37 versus Atlanta on November 6, 1985 – and passed for a 2004 season-high 417 yards with two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception in 57 attempts and posted a 99.8 passer rating. Trailing 28-12 with 8:19 remaining, Rattay led the 49ers to a pair of touchdown drives, capping each with a two-point conversion to force overtime. The 49ers’ two fourth-quarter touchdowns marked the first time the Cardinals defense had surrendered a touchdown since the second quarter of Week 2 against New England. In his fifth season from Louisiana Tech, this is Rattay’s first career Player of the Week Award. DEFENSE: DE JAMES HALL, DETROIT LIONS Hall played an instrumental role in the Lions’ second consecutive road win, a 17-10 triumph over the previously undefeated Atlanta Falcons. He totaled three tackles, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for a Lions defense that totaled 6.0 sacks and held the No. 1 rushing attack entering the game to 94 yards. With the Falcons driving for the potential game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Hall’s fumble recovery on a 3rd and 15 from the Detroit 26-yard line sealed the victory and improved the Lions to 3-1 on the season. Detroit is tied for first place in the NFC North with the Minnesota Vikings. In his fifth season from Michigan, this is Hall’s first career Player of the Week Award. SPECIAL TEAMS: K STEVE CHRISTIE, NEW YORK GIANTS Christie helped the Giants to a 26-10 win against the NFC East-rival Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium, scoring 14 points in the victory. The veteran kicker connected on four of four field goal attempts from 31, 51, 47 and 26 yards. His 51-yarder came with two seconds remaining before halftime, reducing the Giants deficit to 10-6. After New York had taken a 13-10 lead, his fourth quarter field goals of 47 and 26 yards helped cement the victory. In his 15th season from William & Mary, this is Christie’s eighth career Player of the Week Award and first since Week 10 of 2000 with the Buffalo Bills. 2004 NFC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
