NFL PRESS BOX NOTES – WEEK 10

4,000-YARD RECORD TO FALL?: In 1967, the New York Jets’ JOE NAMATH (4,007) became the first quarterback in history to throw for 4,000 yards in a season. In 1999, five passers reached the 4,000-yard mark, the most in a season.

That mark can fall in 2004. Halfway through the season, nine quarterbacks are on pace for 4,000 yards, headed by Indianapolis’ PEYTON MANNING, who is on target for 4,858 yards. If Manning reaches 4,000 yards, he would tie DAN MARINO (6) for the most such seasons in history. The nine quarterbacks who project to 4,000 yards in 2004:

4 FOR 4: The Buffalo Bills’ WILLIS MC GAHEE last week became the third running back since 1970 -- and second in 2004; Tennessee’s CHRIS BROWN -- to rush for 100 yards in each of his first three career starts. He ran for 132 yards against the New York Jets on Sunday.

With another 100-yard performance Sunday night against New England, McGahee would join STUMP MITCHELL (1982-85) as the only player since 1970 to accomplish the feat in four consecutive starts – and first to do so in a single season.

RED-HOT: The Indianapolis Colts have scored 20 touchdowns in their last 21 trips into the red-zone. With three more TDs in their next four trips inside the 20, the Colts can surpass the Kansas Chiefs of last season for the most touchdowns in 25 attempts in the red-zone in the past 10 years. Most touchdowns scored in 25 trips into the red-zone since 1995:

MULTI-FACETED: When the Seattle Seahawks face the St. Louis Rams in an NFC West matchup Sunday, two of the top five leaders in multiple-touchdown games since 2001 will meet.

Since he became a full-time starter for the Seahawks in 2001, running back SHAUN ALEXANDER has had 17 multi-TD games, including four this season. That total trails only Kansas City’s PRIEST HOLMES (24) in that time. Rams running back MARSHALL FAULK ties for the fifth most multi-TD games since 2001 with 11.

PRODUCTIVITY & RELIABILITY: When the Kansas City Chiefs play in New Orleans this Sunday, two of the most productive and durable quarterbacks in the NFL will be on display.

Since 2001 when the Chiefs’ TRENT GREEN joined the team and the Saints’ AARON BROOKS became the club’s starter, the quarterbacks have ranked in the top five in the NFL in passing yards and consecutive games started.

Green ranks second in yardage since 2001 with 13,664, trailing PEYTON MANNING (15,207). Brooks is fourth with 12,820 yards.

Brooks and Green have not missed a start in the past three-plus seasons. That consistency ranks them third and fourth, respectively, in the category among active quarterbacks.

ADVANCE ON LANCE: With his 111-yard receiving performance against New England last week, St. Louis Rams wide receiver TORRY HOLT now has 30 100-yard receiving games in his first six seasons. With another 100-yard game this year, Holt will tie Pro Football Hall of Famer LANCE ALWORTH for the third most 100-yard receiving games in a player’s first six seasons.
