FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 9, 2004
NFL PRESS BOX NOTES – WEEK 14 12-1 RECORD CAN BE SET: Three teams enter Week 14 with 11-1 records – the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. Only once before in NFL history have three clubs had 11-1 or better records (1984; 11-1 Denver, Miami and San Francisco). Three teams have never been 12-1 or better. The Eagles, Patriots and Steelers this week can become the first such trio to reach those records in the same season. TOUCHDOWN MANIA: In the first 13 weeks of the season, 14 players have each scored 10 or more touchdowns. Four players have nine TDs, while four have eight. If four players score their 10th TD this weekend, the total of 18 players with 10 or more touchdowns will be the most through 14 weeks since 1970. The top five seasons with the most players with 10 or more touchdowns through Week 14 (since 1970):
* Through Week 13 Last weekend, NFL teams scored 89 touchdowns, bringing the season total to 942. That is 48 more touchdowns than teams scored at this point last season (894). A total of 788 points were scored in Week 13, tying the all-time mark for a weekend of September 5, 8-9, 2002. Scoring is up over last year at this point, 42.8 to 41.9 points. MANNING GOES FOR MARINO RECORD: This Sunday, Indianapolis Colts quarterback PEYTON MANNING can break DAN MARINO’s NFL record for TD passes in a season. With 44 touchdowns through 13 weeks, Manning is five TD passes shy of topping the total of 48 Marino threw in 1984. Manning has thrown five or more TDs in a game six times in his career, including an NFL-record four times this season. In his 17 years with the Miami Dolphins (1983-99), Marino – a semifinalist for selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005 – created a lasting legacy. When he retired, Marino owned 23 NFL passing records and tied for four more. This season, one of those records has already been broken, one tied and more are being challenged. Following is a list of Marino records that have been or can be broken or tied this season:
* Denotes tied or broken -- NFL -- NORTHEASTERN STORM: Pittsburgh Steelers running back JEROME BETTIS has rushed for 12,980 yards in his career, fifth-most in NFL history. The New York Jets’ CURTIS MARTIN ranks sixth all-time with 12,974 rushing yards. Bettis (20 yards) and Martin (26) can each reach 13,000 career rushing yards this week when the Steelers host the Jets. It would mark the first time in NFL history that two players reached the 13,000-yard milestone in the same game. Only four players in NFL history have rushed for 13,000 yards. Three are in the Hall of Fame and the other is still active (NFL career rushing leader EMMITT SMITH):
ROOKIE RUNNING WILD: Dallas rookie running back JULIUS JONES can set an NFL record this Sunday, and also move up in another category when the Cowboys host New Orleans. Jones has 30 or more carries in each of his past three games. Only one other player in NFL history had 30 carries in three games in a row -- Pro Football Hall of Famer EARL CAMPBELL, who had 36, 30 and 31 rushes in three consecutive games from November 2-November 16, 1980 for the Houston Oilers. With another 30-carry game Sunday, Jones will set the standard in the category. Jones has rushed for at least 150 yards in his last two games. With another such performance, he will become the first rookie in history to do so in three consecutive games, and join eight other players with at least three 150-yard rushing games in a row. NFL players with three or more consecutive 150-yard rushing performances: MOST CONSECUTIVE 150-YARD RUSH GAMES
* Active COLTS SCORING MACHINE: The Indianapolis Colts have scored 182 points in their past four games, posting at least 40 points in each game. If they score 40 points on Sunday against Houston, Indianapolis will become the first team in NFL history with 40 points in five consecutive games. Most consecutive games with 40 points:
With 40 points, the Colts can become the highest-scoring team over a five-game span since the 16-game schedule began in 1978:
* Four games In addition, Indianapolis can become the first team in NFL history with three players with 10 or more receiving touchdowns in a season. MARVIN HARRISON has 12 TD catches entering Week 14, REGGIE WAYNE caught his 10th TD pass last week, and BRANDON STOKLEY (9) needs one TD to enable the Colts to set the standard. |
