NFL PRESS BOX NOTES – WEEK 3

DOWN BUT NOT OUT:  History shows that 0-2 teams advance to the playoffs more often than people might think.  Since 1990, 17 teams have begun 0-2 and still qualified for the postseason.  The 0-2 Dallas Cowboys in 1993 won Super Bowl XXVIII, the 0-2 New England Patriots of 1996 played in Super Bowl XXXI, and in 2001, the 0-2 Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVI.  Last season, the Philadelphia Eagles began 0-2 but rebounded to win the NFC East Division and claim the best record in the conference (12-4), advancing to their third consecutive NFC Championship Game.

Following are the 0-2 teams since 1990 to qualify for the playoffs:

VICK IS QUICK:  Atlanta quarterback MICHAEL VICK ran for 109 yards last week in the Falcons’ win over St. Louis -- the third 100-yard rushing game of his career.  Vick is only the sixth quarterback in history with at least three 100-yard rushing games.  The total ties for the second-most such games by a quarterback.  With one more 100-yard game, Vick will tie BILLY KILMER for the NFL record.  Vick’s three 100-yard rushing efforts have come in 30 games, the fewest number of games needed by a QB to reach that total.

WINNING QBs:  When the Green Bay Packers visit the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the two winningest quarterbacks of the past five-plus seasons will meet.  Since 1999, Green Bay’s BRETT FAVRE and Indianapolis’ PEYTON MANNING have each won 52 regular season games, the most wins by a QB in that span.

SUPER REMATCH:  When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Oakland Raiders on Sunday night, it will mark the 34th Super Bowl rematch in NFL history.  The Buccaneers defeated the Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003.

The rematch has normally favored the Super Bowl loser.  Those teams have won 56 percent of the rematches (18-14-1).  However, since 1990, the winning Super Bowl team has won five of the nine rematches.

RUSH HOUR:  The Jacksonville Jaguars have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 17 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL.  The Jaguars visit the Tennessee Titans this week, where the streak will be tested.  Titans running back CHRIS BROWN has rushed for 100 yards in each of his first two career starts this season and seeks to become only the second running back in history with 100 yards in each of his first three starts.
